“For a limited time only – you can beta-test WordPress 2.9 from the comfort of your own installation!”

In the “another reason I like WordPress better for blogging” category, the folks over at WordPress.com have published a detailed article on how WordPress users can get involved in the beta-testing of WordPress 2.9 – the next major release. Included in the options for aspiring beta-testers is a plug-in that will automatically upgrade your site to the new version, and will keep you on the up-and-up. (more…)

statistics
With this site refresh, I decided I was going to do something that, for the most part, I avoided on my last site incarnation. I’ve installed a battery of statistical gathering tools on my site to see how users are using the various globs of data. It has become eye-opening to me just how much data you actually can gather now-a-days. Some of the tools I have configured on Realjenius.com: (more…)

Captcha is Back

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Well, I was hoping to avoid it, but the spam hit like a tidal wave with the new site… so captcha is back.

Unfortunately, that won’t stop the live-person spam that has been rolling in. It was particularly laughable how many folks decided to provide anemic spam-link-riddled comments to my ‘spam has started‘ blog entry.

Great post! Spam is a big problem, but we all have to deal with it. Totally sucks! Check out my cheap designer watches here!

Really… what kind of life do you have to be living that you spend all of your time spamming blogs to hopefully get your search results up and get more folks to go to your advertising death-trap? Writing a spam-bot is one thing… doing it yourself (or paying a real person in a seat to do it) – it’s just pitiful.

You will be missed little druplicon

You will be missed little druplicon

As part of the recent overhaul to my site, I moved away from the content management tool that I have evangelized so proudly in the past – RealJenius.com is no longer running on Drupal.

I still think Drupal is a remarkable piece of engineering; in my opinion it shows how far a language like PHP can be molded (disclaimer: I am not a fan of PHP as a language, however it’s portability and ubiquitous availability certainly make it a good and easy choice for pre-built tools). I also feel that for general purpose content-based web-application, it’s hard to beat the flexibility Drupal provides. Modules like ‘Views‘ and ‘CCK‘ are shining examples of the malleability and power that Drupal can offer.

Unfortunately, for me Drupal was just too much damn work.

My site is meant to be an efficient blogging platform. I was able to make Drupal run perfectly fast (something of which I blogged about), and it was certainly reliable, but that is only a small portion of what makes an efficient blogging platform. A good tool for blogging must make me an efficient blogger – something at which Drupal was failing. (more…)

HomeAlone

Oh no! Change!

That’s right, kiddies. I’ve uprooted all that was Realjenius.com once again. This new version includes a major UI refresh (obviously), as well as a significant shift on the underlying platform.

If you’re looking for the old content from Realjenius.com – I’ve taken a snapshot of ye’olde Realjenius and moved it over to archive.realjenius.com – searching and browsing should still work.

I intentionally avoided migrating content this time through – I’m ready for a fresh start, and eventually I’d like to drop archive.realjenius.com like a bad habit. For now, I’ll be tracking Google Analytics to help make that decision; for better or worse some of the stuff floating around over there is still rather popular in google searches.

Stay tuned for more on what I changed, why I changed it, and how I’m liking the new changes. Oh, and if you have no idea who I am or what I’m talking about, be sure to read my about page.
